Football Season

Sometimes during my increasingly infrequent television sessions, I will switch directly from the cable news to a sporting event, or sports news. It has often struck me as both sad and wonderful that many people, myself included, can find so much comfort, exhilaration, and even peace in sports, while the world is engaged in so many life and death conflicts.

While wars rage on, the world economy struggles, and literally millions of Americans scrape for that next meal, sports on every level provide an outlet for us to (temporarily) forget our worries. I am sure that some will focus on the negative here, saying that we are insensitive to the world around us and fixating on something ultimately irrelevant and unnecessary. While this is valid to an extent, I think that part of what makes our society grand is the enjoyment of our unique liberties on a daily basis.

That I can sit on my couch, or attend a college football game on my leisure is a testament, not an insult, to the brave volunteers who protect our hard-earned freedoms. Many countries exist in which there is little opportunity for leisure at all, as millions of our fellow human beings live in daily fear for their lives, under totalitarian rule, or the constant threat of famine, natural disasters, and the like. Truly, regardless of our troubles, it is still mighty good to be an American.

So this Labor Day weekend, celebrate your privileges and count your blessings, whatever they may be. If you like football, there is plenty on tap. If not, check out the "other" football, as the U.S. takes on El Salvador in a crucial World Cup qualifier. It is your right, and your privilege to do so.

The self-destruction of Barack Obama

Rarely has a President been so extreme, so foolish, and so self-righteous that he did not win re-election, after having taken the White House from the opposing party. Jimmy Carter managed this feat, and Barack Hussein Obama stands poised to join the elite club.

The American people, whether our Divider in Chief wants to acknowledge it or not, are still a center-right people. When, in a nation built by patriots who loathed royalty, a person ascends to the highest position of leadership in the free world, we expect that person to be hell-bent on uplifting and defending our country, not himself. The messianic image parlayed by this madman, and the drooling media that supports it, have incensed the populace to a point of anger. We don’t like kings. We don’t like dictators. We run them out of town.

Barack Obama has decided that he knows best, and he will stop at nothing to make sure that America is "remade" in his image. We unwashed masses had better drink the kool-aid or "get out of the way," according to Obama himself. But he has hit snags. Protests. The people are not taking this lying down, and it’s making him mad. He is not accustomed to hearing "no." He is not accustomed to failure. He is rattled, stressed, and coming unhinged with increasing speed. The look in his eyes is reminiscent of Cruella de Vil towards the end of 101 Dalmations, when she is driving recklessly faster towards her goal, caution thrown to the wind. Obama is losing his grip on reality, his smooth politicking becoming ever more transparent. He barely stops short of pounding his fist like a petulant child who is constantly being denied an ice cream cone.

Keep it up, America. You know what is best for you, and no government can provide it.

Optimism is the only answer

What am I so happy about? Why should you be happy? What could possibly stem the tide of pessimism that paralyzes the masses? This is still America, and Americans vote out lawmakers who fail them.

This will not happen overnight; alas, November 2010 feels somewhat distant right now. The Porkulus is a reality, and will be damaging to our economy long-term. There is nothing that can be done about that. However, the politicians responsible for causing this egregious mistake to become law will have to be held accountable for their actions, one by one, for the next 6 years. Justice can be served, and the Coup of ’94 can be re-lived, and surpassed.

If responsible, fiscal conservatives will utilize the microphones and websites available to them to clearly communicate the difference between spend-panic-repeat governance, and policies that foster prosperity, then behold, we can prosper once more.

Congressional Republicans have taken an important first step in announcing their opposition to Keynesian failure tactics by mustering their best imaginable turnout against H.R.1 (Specter, Snowe, and Collins can hardly be counted as Republicans but their turn at the ballot box will come as well). I believe that they must continue the fight with constant commentary on the shamefully detrimental effects that this bill will have on the country as a whole, both on the floor of the Capitol, and in media outlets nationwide. Credit is due to John Shadegg, among others, for embracing this opportunity. If any are unwilling to engage this approach, a changing of the guard is necessary. Fresh, young, anti-politicians will be needed to carry this message to Washington. Can you say Sarah Palin?

The time for head-hanging has passed, and the time for optimistic, aggressive action is nigh. Is that not what built our incredible nation in the first place?
